Legal and Illegal Immigrants Need to Educate Themselves
The panel Governor Carcieri created to monitor unexpected consequences of his exective order dealing with illegal immigration has recommended he issue a "clarifying" statement to alleviate fears and concerns. Personally, I don't care it the Governor issues another statement or not. This issue has received a great deal of attention on television, radio, the Providence Journal, and from community groups. If their is still confusion after all this coverage, then those affected either aren't looking hard for information, or they are ignoring the truth.
The Governor's executive order is rather innocuous and straight forward. All state employees and employees of businesses hoping to obtain state contracts will have to use e-verify to confirm their legal status. Some state troopers and corrections officers will be deputized by ICE, and violent illegal immigrants will be deported more quickly. As far as I'm concerned, the State of Rhode Island has the right to establish requirements for employment, and we also have the right to deport illegal immigrants who have committed crimes as quickly as possible. To me, this seems like common sense.
The State doesn't really need a "clarifying" statement from the Governor. Instead, we need to have an end to the disinformation and lies being perpetuated by advocates for illegal aliens, and an increase in education about what this order really means. I often read about community groups talking about the fear among legal immigrants. Here's my question: Are these community groups and churches working to inform legal immigrants that they are not the target and have no need to worry? If legal immigrants are keeping up with the news, then it should be fairly obvious that they have no need to worry.
As for illegal immigrants, the executive order is meant to make life less comfortable for them. They are breaking the law and we shouldn't concern ourselves with what illegal immigrants think about our methods of handling illegal immigration. After all, their actions demonstrate how much respect they have for our nation and laws.
